ok, just got back from LXG ....
... oh, the potential! how they didn't even SEE the potential!! that could have been SO SO good, but nooooooooo .... gah!
*WARNING - SPOILERS*
ok .... the characters themselves were entertaining. i loved the invisible guy, but that's probably because i have a thing for british humour and such. and dorian gray, damn, i would have definitely jumped him at first chance.
but then again, that's partially due to my infatuation with stuart townsend.
the characters were well played, i think. and the literary references amused me. but .... *sigh* .... my list of issues:
1. the big one - the whole Venice thing. ok, i've been to venice. NOTHING IN THAT SCENE WAS REMOTELY POSSIBLE. who the fuck hired the guy to design that scene/set??? i'm starting to doubt that he'd even BEEN to venice. hello, the canals ARE NOT THE ENGLISH CHANNEL. you can't fit a giant ass submarine-esque thing of that height (and width, i might add) in a Venetian canal. they're not even remotely that deep, or that wide. NOR are they that STRAIGHT. explain to me how that thing even managed to get through venice. there is one canal around the island that might have worked, but it's not as narrow as the one they had. and then there's the whole bridge thing ... the bridges are not 4 storeys over the canals, they're more like 8 feet. and the bridge they went under was, of course, insanely high. yeah, like those odds work.
then there's the car. i didn't think there was room to drive in venice because the streets are all narrow. people walk/moped.
2. since when do they teach stunt driving in 1899? Sawyer just jumped in the car and did this whole "Cops" type move when they were still using bloody horses. cars did come about around 1900 but they didn't exceed like 2 miles an hour, fer god sake.
3. not enough explanation of the characters. we weren't given anything to tell us of who they were, both in personality and in their history. i tthink the writers just assumed we'd know. it was just left open, so it was weird trying to figure out where each character stood. at least, i think so, anyway.
4. the dialogue. especially in the beginning, when buddy went to fetch quartermain. that was just awful.
5. everyone just jumping on the bandwagon that the invisible guy was behind everything. he hadn't given any inclination to being that evil to any of them up to that point, and suddenly it was all, "well it has to be him!" poirot and holmes, they're obviously not.
6. that sub thing was freakin HUGE. tell me the waves it caused didn't create some kind of tidal problems. and is it just me, or did its size change periodically? some scenes, it looked huge; others, not quite so big.
7. Mina's a vampire. vampires don't particularly enjoy sunlight. HOW was she outside in the sun?? or is she one of those selective vampires that just becomes a vampire whenever one so chooses?
8. machine guns and submachine guns did not exist. furthermore, they're american-made weapons. not european. and tanks ... tanks were in early design phases in the late 1800s, but weren't that advanced until around 1899 - in the USA. not britain. they didn't exist in britain and the british thought they were stupid. the brits didn't use them until 1915 or so for WWI, when they coined the name "tank". so basically there is no reason as to why either of these things would be in britain, especially when the villain himself was british.
9. please tell me the ending means there will be a sequel. please please please.
10. fight scenes - too long, too overdone, too overly-complicated. almost hard to tell what the hell was going on. there were many moments when i was bored watching. actually, a lot of the movie itself was overly dragged out.
11. what the hell was with that tiger scene???
12. since when does Hyde look like the hunchback of notre dame on steriods??
* * * * *
so yeah. it was entertaining, but not enough to call enjoyable. so much potential. i expected so much better, especially with sean connery attached to it. unless they edited out all the related stuff.
did anyone notice the poster on the docks that had the names of the creators? i found that amusing.
but yeah. go see Pirates. much more enjoyable and the plot's a lot better.
side note: the only part of showgirls i've seen is that pool thing, because my cousin wanted to show me how stupid it was. where she's flopping around like a fish out of water. oh, yeah, that's sexy. *rolleyes*
